Appleford places much emphasis on a healthy and active lifestyle. Our PE department boasts a range of lessons that would be the envy of much larger schools. Expert and enthusiastic staff develop both physical fitness and enjoyment in such traditional sports as rugby, cricket, athletics, gymnastics, netball, football and rounders, trampolining, tennis and badminton.

All pupils have structured daily PE sessions aimed at delivering a rigorous programme for physical development which is monitored by the PE staff with twice yearly reports being provided to parents to update them on their child’s progress.

At the 2018 ISA Awards which celebrates the excellence of Independent Schools in a range of categories, Appleford School were delighted to be presented with the trophy for the best school for ‘Outstanding Sport’ (small school), in recognition for the work they do.

Appleford has a strong tradition in competitive sport. Old Applefordians have represented their countries in Rugby Union and a previous Head Boy was National Horse Dressage Champion. Our PE Department not only delivers high quality lessons to develop the necessary skill and enthusiasm in a wide range of sports but also organises competitive fixtures in Rugby, Football, Hockey, Cricket, Athletics and Rounders against many regional teams. We promote competitive sport at all ages and have a range of extra-curricular clubs to support this.

Our girls netball team competed in a five day International U16 Netball Tournament in Paris in 2017, a premier European annual event, playing against other teams from as far away as Australia. Our girls won a trophy at this prestigious event, finishing 8th out of 50 international teams.

Our superb sports hall boasts facilities for all sports together with an indoor climbing wall. All children have access to regular swimming lessons with an end of year gala giving the opportunity for inter-house competition. The highlight of our sporting year is the annual inter-house Sports Day.
