Special Educational Needs Schools
At Appleford, we aim to help each child to achieve his or her full potential. Originally a centre of education for dyslexic students, we now act as a special educational needs school. Our pupils have a variety of special educational needs, including dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia, and we are dedicated to maintaining a safe and supportive environment in which students may learn and grow.
Children that have specific learning difficulties (SpLD) like this often display behavioural problems - although these behaviours can be greatly reduced under the provision of care and support by a special educational needs school. In time, this care and attention will often lead to an increase in self-assurance and sense of self-worth.
In addition to providing support for these specific learning difficulties, we also specialise in assisting learners with a mild category of ASD - a disorder from within the autism spectrum. ADHD, Asperger's syndrome and autism itself all fall under this category and all have an impact, to some extent, on a learner's communication skills. At Appleford, we work closely with students that have these associated learning difficulties and our continued support has led to significant improvement to past student's communication abilities.
According to the 2011 SEN and Disability Green Paper, children with SEN have expressed frustration at the insufficiency of helpful support for their needs offered by their schools. The same paper also states that the parents of children with complex SEN feel that the existing system is unhelpful and does not ensure the best quality of life for their children.
At Appleford, we aim to support all children placed in our care. We are dedicated to helping them get the best out of life, and helping them to acquire the skills required to build a bright future for themselves and their families.
